Fun facts about glass
Have you ever sat on a balcony looking at the Bespoke Glass Balustrade that has been installed, looking around you at the windows in the property and the wine glass in your hand and wondered how one material can create some many different, but equally as beautiful things. Well, welcome to the versatile life of glass.
Here are some interesting facts about glass.
- Glass is made from sand that is melted together, placed into a variety of different moulds to create the chosen shapes and then cooled.
- When a piece of glass breaks it can travel at a speed of around 3000 mph. It is for this reason that we have developed toughened and safety glass for construction purposes.
- Glass is great for recycling and a single piece of glass can be used, melted and reused over and over again. This is wonderful as it is thought that it can take over a million years for a piece of glass to fully decompose.
- We get the term ‘big gob’ – to mean large mouth, from the puffed out cheeks that are displayed by those individuals who self blow glass. They fill their cheeks full of air before blowing down a pipe into a ball of molten glass to turn it into its desired shape.
