Pine is a rather nice softwood that is light in colour and appearance. There are actually one hundred and twenty six types of Pine tree and even then there are thirty five that botanists are not really sure about and have yet to classify them. The Pine tree is an evergreen tree, it never sheds its leaves to any great extent. They come in all shapes and sizes. They can grow 3-80 m (10-260 ft) tall, with most species reaching 15-45 m (50-150 ft) tall.[4] The smallest are Siberian dwarf pine and Potosi pinyon, and the largest is an 81.79 m (268.35 ft) tall ponderosa pine in the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest of southern Oregon.

 

Pines are long-lived and usually exceed 100-1,000 years of age, some even more than that. The longest-lived is Pinus longaeva, the Great Basin bristlecone pine. At about 4,600 years old, one member of this genus, nicknamed ‘Methuselah,’ is one of the oldest living organisms in the world. In the White Mountains of California, this tree can be found, but its location is kept a secret to stop tourists destroying it.  An older tree, now cut down, was 4,900 years old. It was discovered under Wheeler Peak in a grove and is now known as “Prometheus” after the eternal Greek titan and betrayer of Zeus but the provider of fire to humans.
