Straight needles

Straight needles have a point and endpoint on both sides to stop stitches from falling off. The standard sizes are available in different lengths. You’ll need longer straight needles if your project is wider. This will allow you to fit all your stitches comfortably on one needle. Start with all the stitches on one straight needle, and then work across the stitches so that when you finish knitting a row, all the stitches are on the second needle.

Typical Uses – Straight needles are used to knit flat. This means that they are usually used for knitting on the wrong side.

Double pointed needles

These are a set of four or five needles that have points at either end. These needles are used to knit in the round if there aren’t sufficient stitches on a circular one. These needles are available in the same needle sizes that you would find on straight or circular needles. DPNs are used to evenly divide the stitches across three or four needles and knit the round using one of those extra needles. When you use DPNs to knit, as you work across one needle you remove the stitches and then you use the same needle to continue knitting across the next needle.
