In October 2017, the government’s rogue operators database was launched alongside new measures for banning orders against private landlords and rent payment order measures. Crackdown on unscrupulous landlords

The list was introduced as a result of the Housing and Planning Act 2016 which gained royal assent in May 2016. The purpose is to protect tenants from unscrupulous landlords who provide sub-standard rental accommodation, as well as those who operate on a criminal level.

For now, the blacklist is only accessible to the Department for Communities, local government and local authorities. However, there have been calls from some trade bodies for tenants, landlords and letting agents to be given access.
